William Angliss Institute has been a member of Sustain since 2016. In addition, William Angliss offers significant support to Sustain through the provision of office, meeting and event venue space, as well as in-kind and financial sponsorship of Sustain events and networking activities.
William Angliss Institute (WAI) is the Government endorsed specialist training provider for the foods, tourism, hospitality and events industries, delivering a range of courses within Australia and internationally. With around 18,000 students enrolling each year, WAI offers a broad range of training and education programs including accredited traineeships and apprenticeships, certificates, diplomas and advanced diplomas, short courses, graduate certificates and degrees.
Established in 1940, WAI’s main campus is located in the heart of Melbourne’s central business district. WAI has offices in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, servicing both metropolitan and regional areas across the country. WAI also delivers specialist training through four joint-venture campuses in China and through various international consultancy projects throughout the world.
Unique in Australia, and of special relevance and importance to Sustain, WAI offers the country’s only Bachelor of Food Studies and Master of Food Systems and Gastronomy. With their strong focus on food systems, these programs provide an excellent complement to Sustain’s work. Several WAI students have benefited from the collaborative relationship between Sustain and WAI, volunteering at and attending Sustain events, hearing from thought and practice leaders in the sustainable food systems field, and broadening their knowledge and networks.
This collaborative relationship was recently recognised in August 2018, when Sustain was contracted by Agriculture Victoria to conduct a statewide survey of artisanal producers and premium food businesses in order to complement the State government’s mapping of this sector. The results of this survey were presented to Agriculture Victoria staff and directors on 14 September and helped inform the content of the artisanal agriculture Roadmap that was subsequently released on 17 September. In designing the survey and analysing the results, Sustain drew on the expertise and experience of William Angliss staff, namely Dr Kelly Donati and Dr Caroline Winter.
