Community Gardens in New Estates – City of Casey

Sustain partnered with the City of Casey and Stockland to co-design a best-practice model and Impact Measurement Framework for community gardens in new residential developments. The project focused on how community gardens can build social connection, improve health and wellbeing, enhance food security, and foster sustainability in rapidly growing urban areas.

Drawing on literature, stakeholder and community engagement and consultation, and council planning goals, the detailed framework establishes clear indicators for assessing social, environmental, and financial benefits — from increased social participation to biodiversity and compost health.

The outcome is a practical, evidence-based framework now guiding implementation and evaluation of community gardens in Casey’s Clyde (Evergreen) development. It supports Council and developers to track long-term impacts, inform policy, and embed gardens as vital social infrastructure for healthier, more connected, and resilient neighbourhoods.
