Mapping Local Food Environments with Northeastern Public Health Unit (NEPHU)
Sustain partnered with the Northeastern Public Health Unit (NEPHU) to map local food environments across ten councils in Melbourne’s north and north-east. The project identified inequities in access to healthy, affordable, and culturally appropriate food and provided councils with detailed data and interactive mapping tools to inform planning and policy.
Building on NEPHU’s Local Food Environments Summary Report (September 2025), Sustain hosted two national Mapping Webinars attended by more than 200 participants from councils, public health units, and universities.
As a result, most participating councils have now embedded food system actions into their Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plans (2025–2029). The project has strengthened regional collaboration, created a shared evidence base for decision-making, and supported NEPHU’s goal of advancing health equity and sustainable food systems across the region.
