What the war will mean for food security in Australia, and how governments should respond

Australia produces plenty of food, but that doesn’t guarantee food security in a global crisis. Our system relies heavily on imported inputs like fuel and fertiliser, as well as stable international supply chains — all of which could be disrupted by war.

Nick spoke to Croakey Media about how food security is not just about supply, but also access and affordability. Many Australians already struggle to afford healthy food, and disruptions could make this worse.

Experts say governments need to rethink their approach — focusing not just on production and exports, but on building a more resilient, fair, and locally supported food system.
